The first code that runs when the computer is turned on is the BIOS. Today’s BIOSes are UEFI-type, which overcome many of the limitations of the past and are much easier to provide with a graphical, mouse-usable environment. The BIOS is an electronic chip that sits on the motherboard and is managed by software. This software monitors the performance of all elements on the motherboard and performs the BOOTING process on computer systems, including laptops. BIOS stands for basic input/output system.
